W-507: HEALTH EFFECTS OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES

UNDERSTANDING OF HEALTH HAZARDS OF SPECIFIC CHEMICALS IS ESSENTIAL TO MEASURE AND CONTROL THE HAZARDS.

The aim of the W-507 course is to provide practical understanding of the intake, absorption, distribution, storage, and elimination of hazardous substances in the body and the resulting health effects.

The course also includes discussion of specific industrial processes involving toxic substances and control.

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide definitions of commonly used toxicological terms
  • Describe the main routes by which hazardous substances can enter the body, and the factors which influence their absorption, distribution, storage, and elimination
  • Describe the main sources of information on hazardous substances and processes
  • Describe the main features of the principal target organs affected by hazardous substances at work, and the factors which influence the degree of harm
  • Describe the main routes of exposure and health effects of hazardous substances commonly encountered in the workplace
  • Basic interpretation of the results from epidemiological studies
  • Industrial processes involving hazardous substances

Upon Completion:

  • All participants receive a "certificate of completion" from JAS International upon completion of the course (regardless of completion of the BOHS examination)
  • Participants will receive a certificate from the BOHS after passing the exam
  • Participants will earn 40 contact hours of formal industrial hygiene training which may be applicable towards qualification to sit for the certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) examination
