Veronica F. Chan, PhD

Dr. Veronica F. Chan is one of the pillars of the College of Public Health. Graduating in 1954 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Hygiene, she joined the College of Public Health (CPH) as a faculty member at the Department of Medical Microbiology. She later pursued a Ph.D. degree in Virology at the Yale University in USA. Dr. Chan enjoyed a long career as a professor, researcher, author and consultant in various national and international institutions. She served as Consultant in the Department of Health, Technical Adviser in the World Health Organization, Regional Director of SEAMEO-TROPMED Regional Center for Public Health, Hospital Administration, Environmental and Occupational Health, Founding Dean of the Graduate School for the Health Sciences, UP Manila and Dean of the College of Public Health, UP Manila (1994-1998). She received the Achievement Award during the 67th Annual Convention of the National Research Council of the Philippines in 2000. Due to her expertise in Virology and Immunology, the Department of Medical Microbiology, CPH was designated by WHO as its National Influenza Collaborating Center in the Philippines until 1998. She also trailblazed in Distance Education at the College and authored and co-authored various books/monographs and scientific articles published here and abroad. Currently, Dr. Chan is a Professor Emeritus at the College of Public Health and holds the distinction of Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology.
