Dr. Jose Ma. M. Angeles is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Parasitology, College of Public Health, University of the Philippines Manila. He is a registered medical technologist, having received his BS degree in Medical Technology at the Manila Central University. He finished his Master in Public Health at the College of Public Health, University of the Philippines Manila in 2008 and then his Ph.D. in Animal and Food Hygiene at the National Research Center for Protozoan Diseases, Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in 2012. He has also received trainings from the Schistosomiasis Laboratory, Biomedical Research Institute in Maryland, USA and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, UK. He was a recipient of Post-Doctoral Fellowships from the Association for Preventive Medicine of Japan in 2013 and from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 2014-2016.

Dr. Angeles has conducted several researches in molecular biology and serological diagnostics of schistosomiasis both for humans and animal reservoir hosts. He is currently working on microsatellite studies for zoonotic schistosomiasis among various geographical isolates and different mammalian hosts. He was part of the research collaboration who received a research grant from the Global Health Innovative Technology (GHIT) Fund of Japan for the development of rapid diagnostic test for schistosomiasis. He’s also commissioned by the World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional Office (WHO WPRO) for the evaluation of recombinant antigens for the diagnosis of Schistosoma mekongi human infection. He has published several research papers in international peer-reviewed journals with high impact factors. He was also a contributor of a chapter about animal schistosomiasis in the book entitled “Schistosomiasis, Epidemiology, Diagnosis and Treatment” published in New York. He has also given oral and poster presentations in local and international scientific conferences and meetings. He is a member of various international professional organizations including Global Schistosomiasis Alliance, American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP), Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine (JSTM), Japanese Society of Veterinary Science (JSVS) and Japanese Society of Parasitology (JSP).
