Ofelia P. Saniel, MPH, PhD

DDr. Ofelia P. Saniel completed her BS Hygiene and Master of Public Health at the University of the Philippines and obtained her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles under a Fogarty International fellowship grant. Dr. Saniel is a Professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Dr. Saniel was awarded the Most Outstanding Alumnus in Research by the UP College of Public Health Alumni Society and a Centennial Professorial Chair. She has been subject expert/consultant to various local and international agencies working on HIV/AIDS research and surveillance and is a member of the National Monitoring and Evaluation for HIV/AIDS working group since 2003. She is currently a member of the HIV/AIDS Asia Pacific Monitoring and Evaluation Reference Group. She has served as External Evaluator, Corporate Secretary and Acting Chairman of the Philippine NGO Support Program and was a member of the In-Country Advisory Committee, Women Studies Project, Family Health International from 1994-1999. She was training/project coordinator of USAID-funded projects and acted as resource person/lecturer in various conferences and training courses in HIV/AIDS and program evaluation and Good Clinical Practice.

Dr. Saniel has been actively involved in STD and HIV/AIDS research projects, either as principal investigator, co-investigator or consultant to various locally and internationally-funded researches. Among her research works are the Validation of the Syndromic Approach for STD Case Management; Estimating Population Size of Sex Workers Using the Capture-Recapture Technique; Prevalence of HIV and Predictors of Condom Use Among Commercial Sex Workers in Metro Manila; and HIV Risks and Vulnerabilities among Filipino Seafarers.
