Vicente Y. Belizario, Jr., MD, MTM&H

Dr. Vicente Y. Belizario, Jr. was former Vice-Chancellor for Research and Executive Director of the National Institutes of Health, University of the Philippines Manila (UPM-NIH) and is currently Professor and University Scientist III. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Global Health, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Belizario is a medical doctor with training and expertise in tropical medicine and public health. He served briefly as Regional Focal Point for Neglected Tropical Diseases in the World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional Office. He has also served as Adviser in regional and international health affairs. He was a member of the Research Strengthening Group (RSG) of the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (WHO-TDR) and later, a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) of WHO-TDR. He currently serves in the Soil-transmitted Helminthiasis Advisory Committee, Task Force for Global Health (USA) as member, and the Forum for Ethics Review Committees in Asia and Western Pacific as vice-Chair and country representative.

His scientific work has been shared in local and international journals, and these have mostly been on malaria and neglected tropical diseases or infectious diseases of poverty, specifically in the areas of epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, control and prevention, which have served as basis for development of global and national policy and improvement of practice. His research team in UP Manila, the Neglected Tropical Diseases Study Group, spearheads the War on Worms Campaign in support of the Integrated Helminth Control Program of the Department of Health in the Philippines.
