Thirst First: Water Safety in Disasters

The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health sponsored a seminar entitled “Water Safety in Disasters: Thirst First” which was held on January 27, 2014 at CPH auditorium. The resource speaker, Engr. Asoka Jarayatne is an expert consultant for water quality from World Health Organization.

Engr. Jarayatne is joined by the reactors, Engr Victor V. Sabandeja, a faculty of Mapua Institute of Technology and a former faculty of Department of Environmental Occupational Health, UP-CPH and Engr.Joselito Riego de Dios, Division Chief and Health Program Officer of the Environmental and Occupational Health Office of the Department of Health (EOHO-DOH).

In the aftermath of super typhoon Yolanda, access to safe water has been a major problem in the affected areas. Water available to the survivors of the disaster may have become contaminated and consequently making them at risk for outbreaks of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever. Poor sanitation, including lack of safe water, toilet facilities and lack of suitable conditions have led to increased number of cases of waterborne diseases in these disaster-stricken areas.

In line with this, the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health in of the College of Public Health, University of the Philippines Manila in collaboration with the World Health Organization will be hosting a lecture by DR. ASOKA JAYARATNE, an expert on water safety from the World Health Organization. His lecture is entitled “Thirst First: Water Safety in Disasters” which will be held on January 27, 2014, 9AM-11AM at the College of Public Health Auditorium, 3F College of Public Health Annex II Building, UP Manila. This lecture is open to all students, faculty and staff.


DR. ASOKA JAYARATNE

Dr. Asoka he has been working with WHO as an expert consultant since 2009. His contributions to WSP activities include development and piloting of the “WHO Quality Assurance Tool”, presentations at the Stockholm Water Week 2010, Water Safety Conference in Kuching, Malaysia, advisory group member for the development of Distribution System WSP Guidance Manual, development of WSP guidance materials, WSP training and assessments in the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Malaysia and more recently in Maldives and Sri Lanka.
