4th Joint Coordinating Committee Meeting (JCC) of the Project on the Prevention and Control of Leptospirosis in the Philippines
The 4th Joint Coordinating Committee Meeting (JCC) of the Project on the Prevention and Control of Leptospirosis in the Philippines was held on December 17, 2013 at the College of Public Health, Lara Hall, Room 407 Conference Room.

The event was attended by the University of the Philippines Manila Chancellor and 4th JCC Chairperson, Dr. Manuel B. Agulto, College of Public Health Dean Romeo Quizon, together with DOH Assistant Secreatary Enrique Tayag and other DOH officials, representatives from Kyushu University headed by Dr. Shin-Ichi Yoshida, Chiba Institute of Science, JST, JICA, Embassy of Japan, World Health Organization, and the LepCon project working group leaders and members.

Updates on activities in Philippines and Japan were presented by Project Managers Dr. Nina Gloriani and Prof. Shin-ichi Yoshida, respectively. Status updates on the Operational Plan and the Project Design Matrix was also presented by Dr. Gloriani. Open forum, ceremonial signing of the minutes of the JCC meeting and group photo sessions also highlighted this event. The committee meeting was ended with remarks given by the UPM Chancellor Dr. Manuel Agulto and Ms. Sachiko Takeda, a senior representative from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

8th Scientific Meeting of International Leptospirosis Society, October 8-11, 2013
The 8th Scientific Meeting of International Leptospirosis Society (ILS) was held at the Centennial Hall, Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan from October 8 to 11, 2013. This was attended by the LepCon group leaders Dr. Nina Gloriani, Dr. Maridel P. Borja, Prof. Lolita Cavinta and Prof. Jonathan P. Guevarra of the College of Public Health, University of the Philippines Manila among others. Oral presentations were delivered by Dr. Gloriani, Dr. Borja and Prof. Cavinta while Prof. Guevarra prepared a poster presentation on the prevention and control of leptospirosis in the Philippines.

Counterpart Training in Japan for staff of the College of Public Health involved in the LepCon Project
From September 2 to November 2, 2012, Ms. Crystal Amiel Estrada, research assistant for LepCon, went to Kyushu University and Chiba Institute of Science to undergo extensive training on the different serological and molecular techniques being used for Leptospira studies. Also included in the training were hands-on practice in animal care and experimentation in the Animal Center of Kyushu University.



From July 2- August 31, 2012, Ms. Ana Kriselda Rivera, research assistant for LepCon, went to Kyushu University and Chiba Institute of Science to undergo an intensive training on the
different serological and molecular biology techniques involving the Leptospira bacteria. At the same time, Ms. Rivera also had training and hands-on practice in the animal facility of Kyushu
University.


Seminar on the Prevention and Control of Leptospirosis held at the College of Public Health during the 85th CPH Foundation Week Celebration
The Seminar on the Prevention and Control of Leptospirosis was held at the College of Public Health last June 21, 2012. The three resource persons were Dr. Nina G. Gloriani, Prof. Jonathan P. Guevarra , and Dr. Manuel Mapue II. The seminar participants were the health workers from different city health offices in the National Capital Region and barangay officials from the study sites. The launching of LepCon educational materials was also held during the seminar.
