Project Purpose Research and development capacity of CPH-UPM is enhanced for prevention and control of leptospirosis through the collaborative research
Outputs expected
  1. The Leptospirosis Prevention and Control Center is established in CPH-UPM
  2. The situation of leptospirosis in the Philippines is estimated through epidemiological studies
  3. Rapid methods/tools are developed for the detection of anti-Leptospira antibodies and leptospiral antigens
  4. Whole cell, sub-unit and DNA vaccines are developed to prevent leptospirosis in animals
  5. advocacy activities are enhanced regarding prevention and control of leptospirosis
Inputs by Japanese side (JICA & JST)
  1. Dispatch of Experts
    *long term Project Coordinator
    *short term Chief Advisor, Bacteriology, Molecular Biology,
    Sero-epidemiology, Diagnostic Kits Development,
    Vaccine Development, Economic Impact Analysis
    Advocacy and Laboratory Renovation
  2. Acceptance of Trainees to Japan
    Several researchers would be accepted annually for 5 years
  3. Renovation of the laboratory in CPH for the project
  4. Provision of equipment for the project
  5. Support on local cost for the experts' activities in the Philippines
Inputs by Philippine side
  1. Operation cost for research activities, including the fund fron PCHRD-DOST.
  2. Allocation of counterpart personnel to Japanese experts
  3. Land, buildings and facilities (offices, furniture, Bio-safety level 2 laboratory and other laboratory)
  4. Maintenance and repair of equipment including replacement of transformers
